About Basketball Hawthorn

Our Vision
Our vision is for Basketball Hawthorn to be the leading community sports organisation in our region, welcoming and uniting all individuals regardless of background, beliefs or ability.

Our Purpose
Our purpose is to lead with integrity and passion both on and off the court, delivering an exceptional experience that supports the enjoyment and development of all individuals within a safe and inclusive environment.

Our History
We are a Basketball Victoria-affiliated association in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, whose roots trace back to the 1970s. Initially known as the Hawthorn Basketball Association, it introduced a junior domestic competition in 1988 and its first Hawthorn Magic representative team in 1991. Over time, this entity evolved into Basketball Hawthorn, emerging as one of Basketball Victoria’s largest affiliated associations, with a significant portion of its membership hailing from the City of Boroondara.

The association saw remarkable growth from the 1990s to the early 2010s. From its inception, the club has been synonymous with excellence in development and competitive prowess, with many of its top boys and girls teams competing in the Victorian Championship division. During its peak, the association boasted one of the state’s highest and most diverse participation rates, establishing it as one of the largest community groups in Melbourne’s inner-eastern suburbs.

During the 2010s, the association’s membership exceeded 8,000 players, coaches and officials. It was home to 13 domestic clubs, 800 domestic teams (juniors & seniors), 40 junior representative teams (VJBL), and 4 senior representative teams (Big V). The Hawthorn Magic program emerged as one of Australia’s premier representative basketball clubs during this era, offering aspiring athletes pathways to compete at the highest echelons of junior (Victorian Championship) and senior (Championship Men, Women, Youth Men & Youth Women) levels. The club’s reputation drew some of the most seasoned coaches and administrators across the state.

Basketball Hawthorn was the recipient of Basketball Victoria’s ‘2015 Association of the Year’, ‘2015 Referee Program of the Year’ and ‘2018 Junior Representative Program of the Year’ awards.

While Basketball Hawthorn enjoyed many years of success, it encountered significant hurdles during the pandemic. With the support of Basketball Victoria, collectively they facilitated rebuilding efforts and achieved stability once more. In September 2022 a new board was formed, which spearheaded a plan for the future, including appointing a new management team, establishing a new junior domestic participation pathway under the Hawthorn Magic club through the EDJBA competition, and stabilising its senior domestic competitions.

Our Future
A CEO was appointed in January 2024, leading the association’s release of its 3-Year Strategic Plan in April serving as a comprehensive roadmap to guide the organisation towards realising their vision of becoming a premier basketball association and a vital contributor to the vibrant fabric of the Boroondara community. At the heart of the plan lies a commitment to excellence and integrity, guiding their actions on and off the court, aspiring to redefine the benchmarks of success for community sports organisations.

Basketball Hawthorn oversees a thriving Senior Domestic Competition, participates in the EDJBA and VJBL as Hawthorn Magic, and offers various beginner and development programs and competitions. Basketball Hawthorn’s purpose is to deliver an exceptional basketball experience that supports the enjoyment and development of all individuals within a safe and inclusive environment. Our vision is to be the region’s leading community sports organisation, welcoming and uniting all individuals regardless of background, beliefs or ability.
